Electrolux Rendez-vous

Electrolux Rendez-vous is the first interactive table that combines the living, eating, and entertaining space. The top of the table is a unique surface of energy that brings appliances to life without the use of a cable. The mobile phone or blender can be placed on the surface to charge or activate. The table top is also an inductive cooking system that uses sensor technology: cooking zones are not dedicated. Instead heat is dispensed wherever the pan is placed. Beneath the table are modular drawers that can hold a stove, refrigerator or almost any kitchen appliance that the consumer needs. Cooking becomes a social activity, with every thing you need all in one place. Programmed into the Rendez-vous is a virtual chef that guides the consumer through the cooking process, making it foolproof. When it is time to eat, the drawers tuck away beneath the table. Rendez-vous breaks down barriers in the home, creating the perfect space for gathering, cooking and eating.

Chen House

Chen House is realized on an old Japanese cherry-farm in the Datun -mountains of North-Taiwan. It is designed as a vessel to react on the demanding wind, flooding and heat conditions on the site.

The house is a stick raised above the ground in order to let the flood waters run under it. The different spaces are connected to a flexible movement within the axis of outdoor and indoor functions. The smaller bathroom and kitchen unit acts as a kicker stabilizing the wooden structure during the frequent typhoons and earthquakes.

The bio-climatic architecture is designed to catch the cool breeze from the Datun -river during the hot days and to let in the small winds circulating on the site between the fresh water reservoir pond and the farmlands. A fire place is used during the winter for heating and for cooking tea. In connection with the bathroom is a small sauna.

The house is designed to give the farmers a needed shelter.

Ruin is when man-made has become part of nature. With this house we were looking forward to design a ruin.

Morgan Aero SuperSports

As part of the Centenary celebrations Morgan announces a truly special model. Designed and engineered in house, the Morgan Aero SuperSports is a lightweight aluminium sports car with a luxurious specification. The interior features a comfortable combination of polished hardwoods, hand stitched leather and electronic technology to create a driving environment that is efficient, ergonomic and sumptuous. In spite of all this opulence the overall weight of the car is still minimal so the car is responsive to driver inputs and economical to run. The unique way Morgan can achieve this is down to our use of aircraft style superformed aluminium outer panels and the skills of our craftsmen to hand finish the assembly of each car.

This technology debuted in the 100 AeroMax coupes built by the factory in 2008 and 2009.

Such was demand for this model, that Morgan have taken the decision to produce the Morgan Aero SuperSports. A limited edition, the car makes use of two aluminium detachable roof panels. These can either turn the car effectively into a coupe or when detached bring fresh air and the aromas of the seasons to the driving experience without undue wind disturbance to spoil the journey. The panels can be stored conveniently in the boot.

The car, of course, benefits from the lightweight aluminium Aero chassis which is adhesively bonded for class leading rigidity. Exceeding global crash protection standards, this is also the platform used by the Morgan Aero Eight GT3 currently competing successfully in the 2009 International FIA GT3 Championship. This chassis combined with the aluminium 4.8 litre BMW V8 engine and a choice of 6 speed automatic or manual gearboxes offers an unrivalled driving experience. No other automatic car offers such dynamic power transmission.

Drawn by Matthew Humphries, and engineered for production by the experienced “Morgan Design” team, the new Aero Super Sports is due to enter production in early 2010. A deposit of £25,000 is required to ensure the supply of one of these exciting new models. It is anticipated to cost around £108,000 plus VAT right hand drive and 140,000 euros plus tax left hand drive.

Charles Morgan, Grandson of the founder said “ The Morgan Aero SuperSports is a luxurious flamboyant sports car which also remains true to Morgan’s philosophy of lightweight minimalist simplicity. It is a celebration of our love of cars and the romance of travel and is a fitting model to announce during Morgan’s Centenary year.”

1905 Chronograph by Gerald Genta for Ritz Fine Jew

In 2007, Ritz Fine Jewellery, London approached M. Gerald Genta with a view to creating a small series of timepieces that combined simple, elegant lines, the best materials and the highest possible level of finish – at the heart of each a movement that would delight even the most knowledgeable and discerning of aficionados. The result is a remarkable feat of watch making skill. Drawing inspiration from no watch that had ever gone before but rather assimilating architectural, cultural and social elements from The Ritz Hotel in London, Genta has created three ranges, each comprising a date model, a chronograph model and a tourbillon model.

Available in a choice of precious metals, the entire collection amounts to just 15 watches, each of which is limited to a numbered edition of one. The dial of each watch has purposely been left blank, free from any form of branding – allowing the collector to personalise the piece (with if desired a motif designed by Genta himself). If the dial is to be personalised, the details of what is required will be carefully considered before a lead time is confirmed. Testimony to Genta’s pride in this extraordinary work, he has for the first time allowed his signature to be engraved on each watch. This self-winding 1905 Chronograph is one of only 15 pieces in the collection. Named after the year in which construction began on hotelier Cesar Ritz's Chateau-style hotel in London's Piccadilly, this cushion-shaped design features an upper case in the form of a 'soft square'. Sapphire crystal with sapphire set winding crown in 18ct white gold (the customer has a choice of fine crocodile coloured straps on a white gold deployment clasp), it is available only through 20ltd.com and is limited to a numbered edition of one.

The packaging for the Tom Ford Private Blend collection is inspired by the dark brown glass colouring of the apothecary bottles used in perfumers’ work rooms.

Generation by Knoll

Generation by Knoll, the first work chair that allows you to sit and work the way you want, previewed in the May 2009 edition of TIME Style and Design, which has a global circulation of 1.3 million readers. The magazine arrived in mailboxes in the U.S. today.

Designed by Formway Design, Generation by Knoll takes elastic design--where a product rearranges itself in response to its user--to a new level.

"This approach creates a new standard for work chair comfort by offering unrestrained movement that supports a range of natural postures and diverse work styles," says Alana Stevens, Senior Marketing Director.

Commenting on "the unique figure-eight design," TIME writer Mengly Taing states that Generation by Knoll "flexes to support the spine while allowing users to move freely to different sitting positions."

Taing's boldly illustrated feature, with a graphic photo of Generation by Knoll in uplifting Lemongrass, also quotes Knoll Design director Benjamin Pardo, who reflects, "Our inspiration was the occupant of the chair and the varied postures adopted during the workday."

Describing an important sustainable design attribute of Generation by Knoll, Taing adds that the chair "uses less material than standard office chairs."

The advanced material used to create Generation by Knoll meets Knoll "Design for the Environment Guidelines," which dictate that design for durability requires minimal use of materials, which must be non-toxic, recyclable-and or rapidly renewable materials.

Echoing the Knoll credo to help customers create inspiring workplaces where people really want to work, Taing closes her piece by musing on the Generation by Knoll aesthetic: "With options such as lemongrass green and firecracker red, the office just got more fun."

Generation by Knoll will be introduced formally on June 15 at NeoCon, the office furniture industry trade show in Chicago. For more information, visit knoll.com in the month ahead.

AUA Annual Meeting, Chicago

I spent last week in Chicago, at the American Urological Association Annual Meeting. I attended the scientific sessions and some interesting courses. The congress was full of news, there are so many simultaneous sessions that it is impossible to see all. It is always a good oportunity to meet old friends and also many invitations and opportunities arise. Soon I will go to Ecuador, Perú, Shanghai, Germany, etc...

From Chicago I flew to San José, to visit the American Medical System's research center, with some of my IGLU (International Greenlight Users Group) colleagues. We are going to promote new clinical studies and new interesting initiatives.

And then, lastly, I took a flight to Seattle, where my sister lives. It had been a while since I last saw her. I spent the weekend with her and this morning I arrived at Madrid, and now I am back to the normal work life!!
